How to rip DVDs to MKV or MP4 files

Image
This is how to rip a DVD movie and convert it to either MKV file or MP4 file with compressed video  and audio data (smaller file size). Personally I prefer to convert it to MKV format as I can embed the multiple channel of language audio and subtitles that are already available in the DVD itself. Software tools needed: MakeMKV Handbrake Operating System:  Windows Steps: Use MakeMKV to extract out the video, audio and subtitles data from the DVD to a mkv file. This extraction will take around 20 minutes to complete and expect that the file size of this file is the same as the DVD. This is because there is no compression of the video and audio data yet. Use Handbrake to convert the DVD extracted mkv file to either mp4 or maintain mkv file format with compressed video and audio data. Depends on the settings of Handbrake, it might took as long as 2 to 3 hours for conversion. Make sure that you choose the desired language audio channel to be in the converted file. Make sure that yo...

How to boot Asus EeePC 1005px from USB drive

Image
I keep forgetting how to boot my Asus EeePC 1005px from USB drive whenever I need to reinstall my Ubuntu Linux into the netbook. This is how to do it. During the BIOS boot-up screen, press ESC button and you will be presented with a boot device menu. Select the USB drive that you have already plugged in to your netbook and press enter. The boot device you selected is temporary and it's good for the purpose of reinstalling OS into the netbook. You don't have to change the boot order from the BIOS setup as the change is going to be permanent. By using the boot device selection menu, you can temporary set the boot device for that boot up only.

How to set Google Chrome custom proxy server settings independently from Internet Explorer proxy settings

Image
Google Chrome web browser by default uses the system wide proxy server settings. It does not have the user configurable settings to set it's own custom proxy server. That means whenever you change the proxy server settings in Chrome, you are actually changing the proxy settings for Internet Explorer too. To configure Google Chrome web browser a custom proxy server settings, this is what you need to do: Google Chrome program has a command switch "--proxy-server" where you can use it to assign a custom proxy server setting. Right click Google Chrome shortcut. Select "Properties". Append --proxy-server="proxy-server-IP:port-number" at the back of the Google Chrome command string in the "Target" box. If your proxy-server IP is "1.2.3.4" and the port number is "8080", then it should look like this: <path-to-chrome.exe>\chrome.exe --proxy-server="1.2.3.4:8080" . Ever wonder why you can't copy and paste from and to vncviewer that is viewing a vnc session from a Linux machine? It's likely that the vncconfig program is not running to handle your clipboard transfer. If you are seeing that you are unable to copy and paste from your vncviewer, run this command at the Linux machine command line window through your vncviewer that is viewing your Linux vnc session: vncconfig & If you want to run this command in the background without the little window with the settings appearing, use this command instead: vncconfig -nowin & Once vncconfig is running, close your vncviewer and reconnect it again. How to bypass the Windows "open with" using web service

Image
Whenever you double click on an unknown extensioned file where the extension is not currently registered to any program installed in your Windows OS, Windows will ask if you like to use the Web Service to find the right program to open your file or if you like directly choose the right program (that is already installed in the Windows OS) to open your file. I find this extra dialog box to be unnecessary to me and usually i would know which program to use to open up the "unknown" extensioned file. You can actually bypass this dialog box by a simple edit to your Windows registry. Steps: Open your regedit.exe program. Navigate to this folder: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer Create a new DWORD  entry with value of 1 . Once you have created the DWORD entry with the proper value, you should get this dialog box directly asking which program to use to open an unknown extensioned file:

What is the difference between javaw.exe and java.exe ?

The javaw.exe command is identical to java.exe, except that with javaw.exe there is no associated console window. This implies you can't get it to display the version with -version, since there is no console to display it on. Use javaw.exe when you don't want a command prompt window to appear. The javaw.exe launcher will, however, display a dialog box with error information if a launch fails for some reason. INDEX PAGE
